Photographing Children

Over the years I have had many experiences photographing children. I have found that photographing for studio, outdoor and lifestyle photos shoots with children all have their own rewards and challenges. Many factors come into play such as; the age of the child, their comfort level, their environment and their involvement with the photo shoot. I put together this small list of examples that I hope will be helpful in deciding your photo shoot options for your little one.

Confident Children

A confident child can be photographed in almost any photo shoot style option. But from my experiences if the child does not necessarily like the clothes, or the props or the area they are in, it can be hard to bring out beautiful smiles and may result in stiff forced smiles instead. I will do my best to relax the little one but the above makes a huge difference. Another tip: If the child is involved with choosing their own props and photo options that will also bring out a natural joy and excitement which will be easily shown in the photos.

Excitable Children

Children that are excitable, rambunctious or curious may be harder to photograph. This is where you as a parent have to be strategic before sessions about what photo session will suit your child. Lifestyle photos always prove to be the best option as it gives them the freedom to just to be themselves in an environment they are comfortable with. A play room with great light, an open yard with swings and trees or a clean well lit master bedroom capturing their rumblings on the bed are some fun options. Capturing their attention for a few seconds for a quick shot is one of the ways I have taken some great photos. But If your dead set on having studio portraits, I always give this caution; there may be less photos to choose from if the child has been busy and playful during the session. I have further polices regarding this as well. That will be something you will have to decide for yourself what's worth it in the end.

Shy Children

If you have a shy child, studio photos can be hard to capture but not necessarily impossible. I find that friendly communication with the child about what I'm doing and letting them know how well they are doing can ease their nervousness. Outdoor/ and lifestyle photography can be great options as well. These options help the child feel more comfortable in a open familiar space and can result in beautiful natural photos. Make sure your child is comfortable in what they are wearing and think about bringing a special friend of theirs (clean stuffed animals or blankets) and we can easily work them into the photo shoot. Children should always always be assisted by their adult parents and should never show up to a photo shoot with people they are not comfortable and familiar with, but this is a rule especially important for shy children getting their photos taken. Another tip: shy children don't always smile in their photos, but that does not mean they are less beautiful.

Children come with many different personality traits with a range of emotions and experiences. At the end of the day you as the parent will be my guiding light when photographing your children. It is always best to be prepared and come with a level of patience that I assure you, I will always have with you and your family. It is always an honor to be part of preserving your memories and capturing your beauty.
